Dan Grade Syllabus

1st dan

Qualifying for promotion to 1st dan

The applicant must be at least 14 years old and have practiced for at least 100 hours after grading to 1st kyu.
Clubs are allowed to adapt the kyu grade syllabus to their needs.

Syllabus

A. Koryu Goshin no Kata (suwari-waza, hanza handachi-waza, tachi-waza)

B. Randori Basic Kata (17 techniques with tanto)

C. 10 counter-techniques with tanto

D. Kakari-Geiko with tanto, Hikitate-Geiko with tanto

For section D, women and elderly examinees may choose to just act as tori, everyone else to do 2 minutes changing the tanto.

The examinee is required to demonstrate the ability to catch the correct timing when executing Atemi-Waza, and to break the opponent’s balance while keeping good posture when applying a Kansetsu-Waza.

 2nd dan

Qualifying for promotion to 2nd dan:

The applicant must be at least 18 years old and have practiced for at least 200 days after grading to 1st dan.

Syllabus:

A. Koryu Goshin no Kata (as for 1st dan plus tanto dori)

B. Randori Basic Kata (17 techniques with tanto)

C. 10 counter-techniques with tanto

D. Tanto randori, 3 bouts lasting 2 minutes each, or, for women and elderly people, Koryu Nage no Kata (14 techniques consisting of 7 omote techniques and 7 ura techniques).

3rd dan

Qualifying for promotion to 3rd dan:

The applicant must be at least 20 years old and have practiced for at least 250 days after grading to 2nd dan.

Syllabus:

A. Koryu Goshin no Kata (all 50 techniques)

B. Randori Basic Kata (17 techniques with tanto)

C. Tanto randori, 4 bouts lasting 2 minutes each, or, for women and elderly people,  Koryu Nage no Kata (25 techniques).

4th dan

Qualifying for promotion to 4th dan:

The applicant must be at least 23 years old and have practiced continuously for more than 4 years after grading to 3rd dan.

A. 8 techniques from Tegatana no Kuzushi

Jodan no Kuzushi (Aigamae-Ushiro Ate, Gyakugamae-Ushiro Ate)

Chudan no Kuzushi (Aigamae-Oshi Taoshi, Gyakugamae-Hiki Taoshi)

Gedan no Kuzushi (Aigamae-Kote Gaeshi, Gyakugamae-Kote Gaeshi)

Koho no Kuzushi (Oshi Taoshi, Ushiro Ate)

B. Goshin Ho, Tekubi Dori
Aigamae Katate Dori (Shomen Ate, Gedan Ate)
Gyakugamae Katate Dori (Shomen Ate, Aigamae Ate, Gyakugamae Ate)

C. Goshin Ho, Datotsushu no Waza (against strikes, punches and kicks)

Shomen Uchi (Aigamae Ate, Oshi Taoshi)

Yokomen Uchi (Aigamae Ate, Tenkai Kote Gaeshi)

Shomen Tsuki (Kote Gaeshi)

 5th dan

Qualifying for promotion to 5th dan:

The applicant must be at least 28 years old and have practiced continuously for more than 5 years after grading to 4th dan.

Aigamae Katate Dori (Oshi Taoshi, Hiki Taoshi, Kote Hineri, Kote Gaeshi, Tenkai Kote Hineri)

Katate Ryote Dori (Tentai Oshi Taoshi, Kote Gaeshi)

Zempo Ryote Dori (Aigamae Ate Omote, Aigamae Ate Ura)

Koho Ryote Dori (Tenkai Ude Hineri Nage, Kote Gaeshi, Tenkai Kote Gaeshi, Tenkai Gyakute Kote Hineri)

6th dan

Qualifying for promotion to 6th dan:

The applicant must be at least 34 years old and have practiced continuously for more than 7 years after grading to 5th dan.

Using Datsuryoku:

Using Kaiten:

Aigamae Katate Dori – Aigamae Ate (using Jodan no Kuzushi)

Ryo Sode Dori – Ude Hineri, Ude Gaeshi (using Chudan and Gedan no Kuzushi)

7th dan

Qualifying for promotion to 7th dan:

The applicant must be at least 42 years old and have practiced continuously for more than 8 years after grading to 6th dan.

Syllabus:

A. Randori Basic Kata (17 techniques without tanto)

B. Basic Ura Waza (10 techniques)

C. Koryu Goshin no Kata (all 50 techniques)

For people taking a dan grade:

1. The examinee must have been taught by the shihan of the organisation or an official instructor nominated by the shihan.

2. For 4th dan and above, the examinee will be asked by the chief examiner to also demonstrate techniques from Koryu Goshin no Kata.

3. The examinee must verbally answer a question chosen by the chief examiner.

4. For 1st dan through 4th dan, the examinee must submit a written report on a subject chosen by the examiner within a week after the grading.
