About Shodokan Aikido

admin @ 11:41 am

Aikido is a traditional martial art that has its origins in 12th century Japan. It has grown in recent times to include competition in fighting and kata.

Aikido translates as “way of harmony of the spirit”. While teaching effective self-defence Shodokan Aikido will promote health, concentration and balance in everyday life.

Shodokan Aikido was founded by Tomiki Sensei. It is the only style of Aikido that encourages competition training, allowing students to test their skills against an unwilling opponent. Through this training students can replace surprise, doubt, fear and confusion with confidence, courage and a clear and calm mind.

The Shodokan teaching system allows students to proceed at their own pace and to develop a deep understanding of Aikido principles.

Shodokan Aikido is taught with an emphasis on safety.

“To injure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.” Ueshiba Sensei
